The Constitution of India

The Indian Constitution is an endearing dream, which is both living and transformative. It is a transcendental social, economic, and political document that stands tall above institutions, securing to all its citizens social, economic, and political justice; liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; equality of status and of opportunity; assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation.

Across all democracies, a nation’s Constitution is a ‘mirror reflecting the national soul’, articulating the values bonding its people and establishing the Rule of Law.

In realising the founding fathers’ constitutional dreams, in protecting the country’s citizens from ‘constitutional cross-firings’ of competing institutions and conflicting ideologies, the Supreme Court of India has played a seminal role and continues to play a significant role in shaping sound jurisprudence, that is in consonance with the objectives and principles enshrined in the Constitution.

This book is a culmination of the arduous efforts undertaken by Shri Dama Seshadri Naidu, Senior Advocate, and Shri Ravi Prakash, Advocate on Record, Supreme Court of India, who have painstakingly endeavored to abridge and consolidate the ‘law’ on the Constitution of India. I extend to them my heartiest congratulations on this achievement and commend them for their laborious and meticulous research, for their insightful analysis and for their effort to segue relevant case laws to legal principles enunciated under each article of the Constitution. It is an easy read, but an essential read. With this practical and user-oriented constitutional guide, students may learn, lawyers may refresh, and judges may study and critique, on their journeys toward constitutional mastery.
